Occupation/ Work: Communications Specialist

An effective communications specialist with over 30 years demonstrated success in investigating and reporting news, building relationships with media, government, and businesses, and increasing public awareness of relevant topics.  Especially effective organizing, planning, and implementing local and national events and programs.

Related Experience....

·      Public Information Officer Knoxville Police Department (16 Years).  Worked with officers, media personnel, government agencies, businesses, and the public to gain respect and create a professional and honest image.  Built relationships to ensure information collected and presented is accurate and fair.  Results:  The KPD enjoys a positive image and excellent relations with the media and the public.

·         Founder of the National Information Officer’s Association (NIOA).  Identified, contacted, and visited the most successful existing state organization, analyzed their practices and results, marketed idea nationally, contacted and enlisted speakers, and coordinated the first conference.  Results: The NIOA now has over 700 members in the U.S., Canada, meets annually, and has over $90,000 in funding. 

·         Initiated, developed and anchored a unique, special television program.  Recognized need to increase public awareness of dangers and myths of alcohol and drug abuse.  Enlisted a producer, met with general managers of all local television stations to enlist support, enlisted sports celebrities to boost interest, and assembled a panel of experts for discussion.  Results:  Program was the first and only broadcast of its kind in the nation and had a very positive impact on the community.  Simulcast on all networks and public television stations, it drew record number of viewers and generated public discussion and a flood of phone calls to the stations for more information.

I realize the Knox County Clerk’s Office belongs to the taxpayers of Knox County.  I pledge to be a steward of that office, open, honest, accessible.  As a life-long resident of Knox County I realize this is awesome responsibility and I will never forget the trust placed in me by the taxpayers of Knox County.  I will be a working, hands-on clerk, available to everyone so the light of openness will shine in our office.  No politics, no nepotism.
