Logan's Thoughts On...

Knox County Schools:

Our job in the County Commission is to oversee and approve the budget for the school system.  I will do my best to communicate with the administrators of each school to make sure they have everything they need to succeed.  If that means me fighting for some extra funds for something for one of my schools, that's what I intend on doing.  Also, I would like to work with the administrators to see what kind of programs they have in place to prepare the high school students for when it's their time to vote.  I would like to see if we could get the younger generation involved in thinking for themselves.

    - Also, I would like to work with some of the local business professionals to see if they would be willing to get involved in the education system.  I spoke to a local CFO for a business that has been in Knoxville for over 50 years.  She informed me that there was a program like this set up for professionals in the field of accounting to go to the schools and talk to their classes.  However, she said it fell through a couple of years ago but would love the chance to get it started again.  I think establishing programs like this, where local professionals can help give back to their schools also gives the students something to build upon or someone to possibly look up to.

Property Taxes:

Living in the city and the county, I am having to pay property taxes to both.  We need to make sure the people know what their taxes are going too.

Development:

Strong business development is key as it expands our tax base but in the same time, we have to make sure that we are filling up the buildings we are constructing with businesses.

Environment:

We have put millions of dollars into the greenway's around Knox county and Knoxville.  We need to make sure that these places are secure and safe enough for people to walk, run, and ride their bikes on.  The great part of living in East TN is it's environment.  It's a must that we do what we can to protect it, get people involved in it and keep it beautiful.

Overall:

    - Win or lose, I want to get people involved and excited about local politics.  Politics, as seen on the local level, in my opinion, is the purest form of government.  By working with my constituents, I/we have the ability to make changes and actually reap the rewards of it quicker than normal.  Whether it's approving funding for making Nubbins Ridge Road better, or working with a homeowners association to help improve their subdivision, or by getting the people of the Pilots, Stokes Electric, Barber-McMurray's, Blaine Constructions, etc, etc to go to the schools and talk to the classes.  We can do these type of things and show immediate benefit, in my opinion.

Lastly, there is a lot of apathy for county government right now.  I want to do my best to help resolve that.  It's our responsibility to help educate the people on the issues and get them involved.  There is no reason that we cannot have voter turnouts for local elections like we do for national elections.  Since January 31st of this year, there have been around 1390 newly registered voters to the 4th district alone.  971 voters out of this group are under the age of 40.  I think someone that is younger, more energetic and who has absolutely no ties to the current political system is needed in county commission to help question the norm as well as be the voice of the people to help change the landscape of Knox politics in the future.
