My name is Kathy Bryant.  I am running for County Commission District 6 Seat A.  I am married to Bob Bryant, a systems analyst with TVA.  I have 2 children, my son Adam 23, a graduate of U.T. with a Batchelor of Fine Arts Degree and my daughter Lee 19, Valedictorian and 2007 graduate of Powell High, currently a freshman at Rhodes College in Memphis.  I have lived in the Powell community for 26 years.

 About Kathy...

Occupation/ Work: Early Interventionist with Tennessee Early Intervention Systems (TEIS) educating and supporting families whose children, birth to 3, have delays.

Three Reasons To Vote for Kathy...

  1. I am running for office to serve and represent the people of the 6th District.

  2.  I come with no personal agenda and will endeavor to present myself in a way that will earn the trust and respect of the citizens I represent.

  3. I have been involved in service organizations at the community/state level (PTA, East TN Council on Children and Youth, Knox County Family Resource Center) that have prepared me to work within a group to reach common goals and provide results.

 Kathy's Thoughts On....

Knox County Schools:

1.  My son and daughter are graduates of the Knox County School System.  They were given a good education.  There are exceptional teachers and administrators in our system.  I would like to insure that the system as a whole is exceptional through thoughtful, fiscally responsible use of all resources.  We can all attribute our love of something whether it’s reading, science, math, cooking, sports, etc. to a teacher we had during our education.  Good teachers deserve to be rewarded for their efforts and schools deserve to have the resources necessary to inspire individuals to learn.  Strong leadership from the superintendent is essential to meet these expectations.

Property Taxes:

2.  The citizens of Knox County are fortunate in that we have some of the lowest property taxes in the country.  While we all benefit from these low taxes in that the money we might pay elsewhere stays in our pockets, I ask this question:  How much more might we have in the form of better schools, roads, businesses if we were willing to pay more?  The quality of something often is dictated by the amount of money someone is able or willing to spend.  I think we need to look at how money is being spent in the county and evaluate how to use that money effectively and efficiently.

Development:

3.  The west part of the 6th District is the fastest growing sector in Knox County at this time.  The Hardin Valley area is developing at a rate that needs to be monitored very closely.  Development is essential for the future growth of an area, but that development needs to be fiscally and environmentally sound.  Infrastructure within developing areas must be able to carry the influx of people, transportation, services, and utilities without exhausting the natural environment on which it depends.

Environment:

4.  I have hinted in #3 that I feel strongly about the environment by stating development should be environmentally sound and should respect the environment on which it depends.  I would like to take a look at formulating some ridge protection policies given the rate of development that is occurring in our area.  We live in one of the most beautiful areas of this country.  People move to East Tennessee because of our natural resources found in the mountains and lakes of this region.  We must work to maintain the beauty of this area while continuing to move Knox County forward in attracting businesses and families to develop and live here.
