Experience, Demonstrated Leadership, and Commitment to Effective Communication.
This first term on the Knox Board of Education (KBOE) has given me the opportunity to form working relationships not only with the other
Board members, but also with the city and county Mayors, the County Commission, the Business Community, and with our State
Legislators. Results of these positive working relationships for Knox County Schools include:
* Changes in BEP funding from the state ($19 million additional last
year for Knox County Schools) and the formation of a coalition of
large school systems throughout Tennessee to continue to advocate for our needs at the state level
* Elected for two consecutive years at the Board Chairperson to help lead the Board through the buy-out of the superintendents contract and the selection of our next superintendent.
* Acknowledgement of leadership abilities noted in election by
members of Tennessee School Board Association as the Regional Director of the Federal Relations Network.
* Recipient of the Outstanding Tennessee School Board Representative Award presented by the TN State PTA (2007).
* Capital improvements for students of the 5th district.
My commitment to effective communication with constituents has allowed my to spearhead many changes within Knox County Schools. The focus on family and parental involvement increased as I
served as the School Board Representative for Family Friendly Schools. I have also supported and promoted the addition of other technology advances including:
 | institution of Parent Portal which allows parents to keep up with all of their
child’s grades, attendance, and transcripts |
 | institution of Parent Notification system which allows almost instantaneous
communication of school information with all parents |
 | establishment of PayPams which allows online payment of school fees, lunches, etc. |
 | I send out regular email updates on issues, inviting feedback, to many, many
constituents. Additionally, I have held numerous community forums and write monthly newsletter
articles for schools in the 5th District. |
 | creation of technology support personnel at every high school |
