About Therea...

Occupation/ Work: Retired Graphic Designer

I retired from Tennessee Valley Authority, as a Computer Graphic Designer, in 1990. For the past four years, I was employed as the Administrator for the Skills Training and (K)ommunity Empowerment (STAKE) Pre-apprentice Carpentry Program. The program was designed to give the underemployed empowerment zone residents an opportunity to train in construction skills, this contract ended in June 2007.

Three Reasons to Vote for Therea...

  1. I feel that with my experience and background working on a grassroots level in the county I have something unique to offer the commission that none of the other candidates can offer.
-Present Board member Knoxville Empowerment Zone
    -Present member, Chilhowee Neighborhood Assoc.
-Present Board Member, (PNI) Partnership for Neighborhood Improvement
-Former Board member, (CND) Center for Neighborhood Development
-Former member Empowerment Zone Advisory Committee
-Present member, (COIN) Council of Involved Neighborhoods
-Representative to (NAWIC) National Association Women In Construction
    -Former member, (NUSA) Neighborhood USA
    -Present member of NAACP

  2. Over the past six years I have heard the cries of the people all over Knoxville. It is easy for me to listen, and hard for me to walk away, without trying to find some solution or resource to remedy the situation. I have worked with felons, the homeless, and the economically disenfranchised citizens. Because of the loyalty that I have shown, people trust me. I want to use my integrity to help heal county commission.

  3. I have a keen knowledge of how to perform the basic policy and executive duties of county commission.

Therea's Thoughts On....

Knox County Schools:

The schools in District 1 have received a disproportionate share of the Knox County School system budget. We have an obligation to invest in our youth and our schools.

Property Taxes:

County Commission's duty is to approve this budget and set the property tax rate for education. I look forward to the opportunity to approve a fair share for the District 1.

Development:

The development in the District varies. We have had some success in our housing, but we still are lacking in business development. The list of delinquent county property taxes for District 1 is extensive. The residents for various reasons cannot keep payments current. Some of our senior residents fear being homeless.
