Tim's Thoughts On...

Knox County Schools:

I think as a community we need work toward creating a world class school system.   Although this comes through our school board, I would recommend three areas:   (1) Parent encouragement.   I think all parents want there children to be successful in school.   I think as a community we can partner with parents to help their children create the best habits of successful students.   I would recommend a system that would include:  information books created by grade to help parents understand the current skill sets being taught, summer workshops for major transition years and seminars that would encourage and inspire parents and students.   (2)    Teacher Encouragement.    I think at every level of our educational system we need to make sure that our schools and teachers have the tools and support to create excellence in the class room.   We could achieve this process through community involvement to help if we are falling short with resource.   I think we also need to celebrating the lives and accomplishments of teachers and administrators.  I would also support a best practice tours for our top leaders to successful school systems in our area.  (3)  School Encouragement.    We also need to celebrate those schools that are successful and rally the support around schools that need our support.    In a community like Knoxville we have so many great resources.   If we could alert our community about opportunities to help, I think we could create a great foundation of community and educational partnership.     There is a reason we all live in the volunteer state.

Property Taxes:

I think we need to be very cautious on how much we tax our citizens.   I think we need a balanced approach to providing services, improving infrastructure as well as planning for the future.    I will use my business experience here to faithfully administer the resources of our government, community and individuals as we try create a great community.    This includes fair taxes, adequate services, infrastructure support that partners with businesses who invest in our community and making sure we have an educational system that grows educated, community leaders.

Development:

If you look at the resources we have in our community we have a tremendous opportunity over the next ten years to make a lasting impact on future generations.  One of the most valuable assets here in the United States is owning and benefiting from property ownership.    As a government we have a unique opportunity to partner with individuals who are willing to take a great financial risk in our community.    I want to make sure we have a win-win for everyone and that individuals around the country want to invest in Knox County .    It is also very important to support our current property owners who have made an investment in our community, as well as facilitating future investment.   As developments continue we need to continue a transport process that lets all parties have a voice so that we can make sound decision.

Environment:

This is one of our most important assets.  In East Tennessee we live in an unbelievable place that people travel from all around the world to visit.    I think we have really made some important strides with green space and parks in our county.    I think we need to continue this investment as well as encouraging recycling programs and celebrating those individuals that donate their time to make sure our roads and parks stay clean.    It is in every citizen’s best interest that we have a great community to live, work and play in for coming generations.
