About Cynthia...

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Cynthia Stancil.  My husband John and I live in the heart of District 1, in the Parkridge community of Park City.  I am 46 years old and this is my first campaign for political office.

Three Reasons to Vote for Cynthia...

  1. I bring to this position 26 years of business experience in the private sector.  I am not now nor have I ever been an employee of city or county government.  I have answered the question of whether or not if elected would I seek reelection in 2010-the answer is yes.  I believe that the term limit is for a reason; we voted on it and made it how we want to run our government.  We want and need people to serve a term of public service not a career of public service.  I pledge that I would only seek to serve the two allowed terms.

I also bring 20 or more years of working as a volunteer in my community.  I currently am serving my second term of service to the Parkridge Community Organization as a board member and secretary of that board.  I also serve in either a volunteer or donor capacity to the following:  Knox Heritage, City People (past board member), Knoxville Zoo, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, Park City Town Hall and the Laurel Theatre.

  2. The reason that I am running for this position is you, the Knox County taxpayer.  I believe that you deserve respect, ethical behavior and fiscal responsibility for the monies that you pay to Knox County to run the county government.  I believe that you expect the county commission to work with the school board, the new school superintendent, Knox County sheriffs department and the city of Knoxville to provide an excellent school system, responsible and appropriate development to move our county and district forward and assessment of taxes at appropriate levels to fund the necessary ongoing business and improvements that are needed.

  3. I believe that District 1 needs a representative that is committed to serving all of the citizens of District 1.  I am committed to serving you and representing your best interest.  I believe that it is time for District 1 to move away from the nepotism and the cronyism that have kept areas of District1 from achieving the redevelopment that is needed.

 Cynthia's Thoughts On....

Knox County Schools:

Our inner city schools are failing our children.  It is easy to cry that we are not getting the funding that we need.   It is going to take more than an increase in funding to right the wrongs of not expecting the highest level of achievement that a student can accomplish. We are not providing what our children need in the most basic way.  We, as parents and neighbors, need to take a more proactive approach to the education of each of our neighborhoods’ young people.  I will work with the new superintendent, the school board and any parents or neighbors to find the solutions that we need to push our students to the highest level of their abilities The education of District 1 students must be the highest level of importance to our district as they will be the people that we will need to lead us in the coming years.  If we hope to retain the children of the people that are raising their families in District 1 we must provide them educational, vocational and business opportunity for their future.

 Property Taxes:

Property taxes are what everyone proclaims that they hate.  They are always too high.  If our property taxes are being misappropriated by elected or appointed officials for their own perks and paychecks, I agree. They are too high if what we are paying with them are car allowances and mileage, Club LaConte dues, lobster lunches at Regas, sorority junkets disguised as political meetings, shopping days for some county employees and as it appears, the list goes on.  If you elect me I will work for you to get to the bottom of how our tax dollars have been, it appears, taken from us and used inappropriately.

Development:

Proper development for District 1 will be crucial to our future.  We have the opportunity to redevelop, over a period of time, the Cumberland Avenue corridor and the Magnolia Avenue corridor.  Both of these projects are important to the future of District 1 for these reasons.  You, the citizens, have told me that you want proper business development for these two areas that is sustainable over the long term.  You have also stated that you want safer neighborhoods and great schools.  By enacting proper zoning, enforcement of codes and development of new businesses, both small business and larger business along and in these corridors we can, over time, achieve all of those priorities.

Environment:

The environmental issues that we face in district 1 go hand in hand with development and redevelopment of our district. We must expect the county commission to provide avenues for proper development of business and residential areas in our district to lessen the negative results that can have on our environment.  As individual citizens we must do our part to keep our district as clean and sound environmentally as it can be.  It does all start with each of us individually.  We can not expect anyone to come and clean up messes we create.
